What has the Baltic done for global ferry industry?
The Baltic Sea encompasses a rich mixture of tradition-laden shipping that has hitherto led the world. It was not always so however.
The Baltic region has taught the ferry industry much over the years even though I have always viewed sceptically – and not for nationalistic prejudice – any claim that it was where ro-ro was actually conceived.
It is true of course that mankind has moved goods by sea for centuries and that at times this would have included use of wheels, but a more truism would surely be an example with more gravitas. I contend that the Viking ex Dinard was the first such vessel to make its mark in the ferry sector.
